They are named from the harp shaped black patch on their back. The female has a lighter patch than the males. Younger seals have gray spots all over their bodies.

As for swimming the seals use their back flippers to swim and their front flippers to steer and direct. Harp seals have the ability to stay underwater for up to a half hour. The avrage length of adult males is 169cm.The average length of adult females is 162cm. The seals are able to live up to 35 years or more.
